Mevea Virtual Seminar 2025: Real-Time Simulation in Development of Autonomous & Electrified Heavy Machinery

By Norrhydro
November 04, 2025

The 12th annual Mevea Seminar 2025 will be streamed live on November 6th. This year’s exciting theme is: “Real-Time Simulation in Development of Autonomous & Electrified Heavy Machinery“.

So, what’s that all about?

As demands for cleaner, smarter, and more autonomous machines grow, the pressure is on engineering teams to deliver complex, integrated systems—faster than ever before.

Traditional, discipline-siloed, and offline simulations are no longer enough to stay competitive. In addition, full-system simulation is needed. It should be real-time and include the machinery, its work process (e.g., dynamic soil), operating environment (e.g., construction site), and sensors (e.g., LiDAR, camera, or hydraulic pressure).

This development approach also requires seamless integration with control hardware and software, often involving co-simulation through direct APIs or standardised interfaces like FMI (Functional Mock-up Interface).

The Speakers

This year’s speaker lineup is especially strong. Three distinguished keynote presenters from internationally recognised industry leaders will share how Mevea’s real-time, full-system simulation is used in the development of autonomous and electrified machinery in a highly demanding and integrated development environment. The sessions will also cover comparisons between simulation results and real-life measurements, as well as the transfer to real-life applications.

Dr.-Ing. Manuel Bös, Head of Emerging Technologies, Liebherr-Werk Bischofshofen GmbH

In his presentation, “The Role of Physics-Based Digital Twin Technology in Autonomous Machinery Development”, Dr.-Ing. Bös will introduce Liebherr’s concept of autonomous machine operation and explain the testing and validation framework enabled by digital twin technology. He will also discuss how these developments can be successfully transferred into real-world applications.

M.Sc. Teemu Sarvijärvi, Technology Development Manager, Norrhydro

In “Virtual Validation of Electromechanical Actuator Performance in Excavator Applications Using Simulink and Mevea”, Mr. Sarvijärvi introduces the combined use of MATLAB/Simulink and the Mevea simulation environment for modelling and testing a 2.5-ton excavator equipped with electromechanical linear actuators. The virtual environment enables performance comparison with traditional hydraulics, supports actuator dimensioning, and accelerates control system development and testing. This approach demonstrates how simulation-based validation can shorten development cycles while highlighting the operational and efficiency benefits of electromechanical solutions.

M.Sc. Steve Miller, Product Manager, Simscape, MathWorks

In “Virtual Testing of Excavator Designs using Simscape and Mevea” Mr. Miller will demonstrate how to combine soil loads and deformable terrain in Mevea with an excavator model in Simscape. He will also show how co-simulation enables comprehensive testing of the entire excavator system, including the controller in Simulink. This approach allows engineers to verify that both the physical system and the controller meet all performance requirements.

The event will also include representatives from Mevea, and each session will be followed by a short Q&A, allowing attendees to engage directly with the presenters.
