Designing Performance –  Engineer’s Role in Hydraulic Cylinder Excellence

By Norrhydro
June 16, 2025

In discussions about high-performance hydraulic actuators,  focus is often given to components, manufacturing processes, surface treatments and field durability. However, true excellence originates well before production — it starts at the engineer's desk.

Cylinder design is the foundation of the performance

Every linear actuator starts as a concept that must respond to application-related demands, environmental challenges and customer-specific requirements. The engineering phase is where functionality and form unite, and at this point, the genuine excellence of the product is crafted.

At Norrhydro, we consider engineering the cornerstone of hydraulic cylinder performance assurance, not just a step in the process. Our engineers are the architects of strength, precision, and reliability. Their mission extends beyond translating specifications into a functional solution, actively improving upon those specifications by applying deep technical knowledge and cross-industry experience.

Engineering with accountability

Designing hydraulic cylinders is a task of significant responsibility.  Our engineers must ensure that every component, tolerance and dimension aligns to each other with the functional demands of the cylinder’s operating environment. Whether facing temperature fluctuations, heavy loads, high-cycle usage, or corrosive exposure, these considerations must be built into the cylinder’s DNA from the very beginning.

More importantly,  the engineer must understand the product objectives,  sometimes even better than the customer. While specifications are the starting point, a skilled engineer brings value-adding innovativeness onto the table: rethinking structures for greater strength, proposing alternative materials for improved corrosion resistance or integrating sensors for smarter systems.

Smarter Cylinder Design with FEM Analysis

Every successful design journey begins with a deep understanding of the unique requirements and real-world operating conditions. This foundation guides the creation of initial concepts, which then evolve into detailed mechanical solutions and accurate 3D models developed using SolidWorks. Critical factors such as material selection, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost-efficiency are also carefully considered during this phase.

Finite Element Method (FEM) testing for hydraulic cylinders is a computer-based simulation approach used to evaluate and confirm a new cylinder design before physical production. By dividing the cylinder and its components into smaller "finite elements," engineers can predict how the cylinder will perform under various loads, pressures, and stresses in actual operating conditions. This process helps in optimising cylinder design and improving safety and reliability.

Cross-industry expertise – A core strength of Norrhydro

One of Norrhydro’s key strengths is the breadth of our engineering expertise. Over the years, we’ve designed and manufactured hydraulic cylinders for a wide range of industries, including:

  • Forestry
  • Material Handling
  • Mining
  • Construction Equipment
  • Marine & Offshore
  • Lifting systems
  • Recycling

This diversity has enhanced our ability to approach engineering challenges from multiple perspectives and implement best practices across different sectors. It allows us to deliver not just hydraulic cylinders, but optimised solutions, customised for each specific application.

Collaboration in the heart of engineering

Designing a cylinder is not a solitary effort. Our engineers work in close collaboration with the customers to ensure that each design meets the expectations of the intended application. The direct interaction often reveals insights that lead to smarter, more functional solutions.

At the same time, the engineer works closely with our procurement team to guarantee the most suitable materials, balancing performance, availability, sustainability, and cost. The seamless co-operation ensures that the final product is both innovative and manufacturable, with an acceptable cost level.

Conclusion: Cylinder design as a strategic advantage

At Norrhydro, we believe that cylinder design is more than engineering—it’s a competitive advantage. It’s the point where technical expertise, industry knowledge, and customer understanding converge to shape not just a cylinder, but a superior user experience.  In today’s world, where machines are expected to do more with less, operate longer, and adapt faster, it is the engineer’s insight and innovation that makes the difference.
